Public Comment Session Held on Guidelines and Standard Specifications (Draft) for the Deployment of OpenRoaming-Compatible Wi-Fi
This is intended for individuals responsible for Wi-Fi deployment at municipal governments and private facilities. Case studies are also featured.
Based on the “Connected Tokyo” implementation policy, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working to expand public Wi-Fi that supports OpenRoaming—a safe and convenient international standard—throughout the entire metropolitan area.
To further accelerate this initiative, the city is developing guidelines for the installation and operation of OpenRoaming-compatible Wi-Fi, as well as standard specifications by facility category to be used during Wi-Fi deployment.
We will be holding a public hearing for Wi-Fi deployment managers at ward, city, and town/village governments, as well as private facilities, to provide an overview of the draft guidelines and standard specifications, present case studies of OpenRoaming-compatible Wi-Fi implementations, and solicit feedback to ensure the content is as effective as possible.Based on the feedback received, we plan to finalize the guidelines and standard specifications and release them in March of Reiwa 9.
Anyone interested in implementing OpenRoaming is welcome to participate. We encourage you to register.

Deployment of OpenRoaming-Compatible Wi-Fi in Tokyo
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to create an environment where all people and things can stay connected anytime, anywhere, and under any circumstances by making comprehensive use of a variety of communication methods. As part of this effort, the government is working to expand public Wi-Fi throughout Tokyo that supports the safe and convenient OpenRoaming service, ensuring that residents and visitors can stay connected at all times, including during disasters.
Features of OpenRoaming-Compatible Wi-Fi
Avoiding the risk of eavesdropping, etc.
Wi-Fi networks compatible with OpenRoaming encrypt the wireless connection and automatically connect to compatible access points, thereby preventing risks such as eavesdropping or being redirected to a spoofed access point.
International Standards Ensuring Safety and Convenience
By expanding public Wi-Fi that supports OpenRoaming—a secure and seamless international standard—throughout Tokyo, we will ensure the security and convenience of communications while also making a significant contribution to supporting inbound tourism.

This refers to the international Wi-Fi interoperability framework established by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), an industry association for public Wi-Fi service providers.
