We support the mass production and market development of Air Solar.

Power and Communications

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has set a target of “approximately 1 gigawatt installed within the metropolitan area by 2035” to promote the widespread adoption of “Air Solar [Note],” a Japanese-developed solar cell characterized by being “thin, light, and flexible.”
To promote the mass production of Air Solar and foster market development, the metropolitan government will establish a new coordinator to connect developers with city, ward, and town governments, as well as private-sector entities, and will begin providing subsidies to cover the costs associated with Air Solar developers’ participation in domestic and international trade shows.

[Note] Air Solar is a solar cell that utilizes a crystal structure known as perovskite.
Compared to silicon-based solar cells, it has the following characteristics and is expected to be highly competitive with silicon-based solar cells.

  • 1) Because it is “thin, light, and flexible,” it can be installed in a wider range of locations.
  • 2) The development of manufacturing technologies could lead to mass production and lower manufacturing costs.
  • 3) Not only is this technology of Japanese origin, but approximately 30 percent of the world’s total production of iodine—the main raw material—is produced in Japan.
