(1)Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo

Toward the realization of a “Connected Tokyo,” the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has signed an agreement with NTT East Corporation to promote the development and dissemination of Wi-Fi in public telephone booths. The development of Wi-Fi in public telephone booths will play an important role in ensuring communications during disasters and in responding to inbound tourism.Starting with areas around major stations on the Yamanote Line and some islands, the network will be expanded to approximately 1,500 locations over the next three years, bringing the total number of Wi-Fi locations provided by Tokyo Metropolitan Government to approximately 3,600, roughly three times the current number, including city-owned facilities. Safe and convenient Wi-Fi provided by Tokyo Metropolitan Government will be marked with a green sticker. We hope that many people will use this network, not only in times of disaster but also during normal times.

(2)Naoki Shibuya, Representative Director, President and CEO, NTT East Corporation

“Through this agreement, we will utilize our public telephone booths to install Wi-Fi in various locations throughout Tokyo. Public telephone booths have been used as important communication hubs to ensure emergency communications during disasters, but we believe this is a very significant initiative that will contribute to the maintenance and development of a communication environment that will remain connected not only in normal times but also in times of disaster.”
Furthermore, this Wi-Fi spot is compatible with OpenRoaming, which we believe will also lead to the provision of a comfortable communication environment. Our company, led by our Disaster Prevention Research Institute, is working to create a disaster-resistant community where “no one is left behind.” We hope to use this opportunity to further strengthen our collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and work hard to create a disaster-resistant city.
