Demonstration project to supply 100% renewable energy to Hahajima Island begins

Tokyo aims to become a “zero-emission island” that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible.
To achieve this, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Ogasawara Village, and TEPCO Power Grid, Inc. have signed an agreement to conduct a demonstration project to supply electricity on Hahajima Island using 100% renewable energy. We are pleased to announce that the demonstration project will begin in August 2025.
1 Project Overview
- Install solar panels and storage batteries on Hahajima to supply electricity solely through solar power generation
- It is possible to supply electricity solely from solar power for about half the year.
- The location for installing solar panels, etc. will be selected using city-owned land outside the World Heritage Site, with due consideration given to the precious natural environment and scenery.
2 Facility Overview
On Hahajima Island in Ogasawara Village, two solar power plants, Hyogidaira Solar Power Plant (718 kW) and Miyukinohama Solar Power Plant (774 kW), were installed, along with storage batteries and a new type of power conditioner, achieving 100% renewable energy and a stable supply of electricity.

3 Demonstration project period
Three years from August 2025 to August 2028
