June Tokyo HIV Testing and Counseling Month – Tokyo Metropolitan Government Initiatives

Every year from June 1 – 30 is “Tokyo HIV Testing and Counseling Month.” We would like to inform you that during this period, we will be expanding the testing and counseling systems at public health centers in Tokyo and raising awareness among young people, who are more susceptible to HIV infection.
About HIV/AIDS
It has been 40 years since the first AIDS case was reported in Tokyo in 1985. The cumulative number of HIV-infected/AIDS patients is 12,100. The number of new infections in 2024 will remain flat compared to the previous year at 290, while the proportion of reported AIDS patients is 21.4%, the highest in the past 10 years, highlighting delays in testing and diagnosis.
In addition, the number of new syphilis infections, which is also a sexually transmitted disease, has reached a record high for the fourth consecutive year, and cases of congenital syphilis and HIV infection have also been reported.
Main initiatives during the month of testing and consultation
1 Expanding HIV and syphilis testing (anonymous and free)
HIV testing can be done anonymously and free of charge at public health centers and testing and counseling centers in Tokyo throughout the year.
During this month, we will expand our system. For details, please see the leaflet (PDF: 614KB).
(1)Public health centers will add days for same-day and regular HIV and syphilis tests (*1) at 17 locations. There will also be holiday and nighttime testing days.
(*1) There are two types of tests: “same-day tests,” in which the results are available on the same day, and “regular tests,” in which the results are available one week later.
(2)The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Shinjuku East Exit Testing and Counseling Center (Kabukicho, Shinjuku Ward) will add chlamydia and gonorrhea tests to the regular HIV and syphilis tests and increase the number of tests it can accept.
2 Raising awareness among young people, who are more susceptible to infection
(1)To raise awareness among teenagers, we will visit youth education facilities to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and syphilis.
(2)At the Tokyo Pride 2025 Pride Festival (*2), one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in Asia, we will work with participating HIV awareness-raising and consultation support organizations to publicize anonymous and free testing by distributing awareness materials, etc.
