Call for submissions of drawings and essays on preventing landslides

Earthquake

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and prefectures have designated June every year as “Landslide Disaster Prevention Month” in order to deepen public understanding and interest in preventing landslides and mitigating damage from them.

The Noto Peninsula earthquake in January 2024, which recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 7 in Ishikawa Prefecture, caused numerous landslides and extensive damage due to the blockage of numerous river channels.

As part of its outreach activities during this month, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is calling for paintings and essays on landslide prevention from elementary and junior high school students, the leaders of tomorrow. In addition, a Landslide Disaster Prevention Month Art Exhibition will be held in two locations in Tokyo.

1 Call for submissions of drawings and essays on landslide prevention

(1)Eligibility

Elementary and junior high school students living and studying in Tokyo

(2)Application period

From Sunday, June 1 – Monday, September 15, 2025 (postmark valid)

Topic: Landslides and related prevention measures

(4)Awards

The best works will be selected from the submitted works for the painting and essay categories according to the number of submissions, and the Construction Bureau Director’s Award and River Bureau Director’s Award will be presented with a certificate and a commemorative gift. The results will be announced through the schools around the end of October.

(5)Handling of Personal Information, etc.

Applicants’ personal information will not be used for any purpose other than to confirm the judging of the submitted work, to notify the judging results, and to announce the results. However, when the work is exhibited or published, the work, name, school name, and grade will be listed.

(6)Other

  • The winning works of the Director General of the Construction Bureau Award will be recommended for a central review conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
  • As a general rule, submitted works will not be returned.
  • Use and copyright of the works belong to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

2 Landslide Disaster Prevention Month Art Exhibition

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will be exhibiting its projects to prevent landslides and the winning works of the 2024 painting and essay contest on landslide prevention at the following venue.

Closed on Wednesday, June 25th for system inspection, but no other closing days
