Expanding support for establishing open roaming-compatible Wi-Fi

Infectious disease town planning

In accordance with the “Connected Tokyo” development policy and three-year action plan covering the period from fiscal year 2024 to 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working to expand public Wi-Fi that supports the OpenRoaming international standard, which is safe and convenient, throughout the city.
Starting from fiscal year 2024, we will provide technical support for planning and financial support for the conversion of existing Wi-Fi to wards, cities, towns, and villages when they install OpenRoaming-compatible Wi-Fi in evacuation shelters and other facilities where many people gather.
In order to further promote development, new developments will now be added to the subsidy eligibility and the project will begin in fiscal year 2025.

Features of OpenRoaming compatible Wi-Fi

1)Preventing the risk of eavesdropping

Wi-Fi that supports OpenRoaming encrypts wireless communication sections and automatically connects to compatible access points, preventing the risk of eavesdropping or being redirected to a spoofed access point.

2)International standards ensuring safety and convenience

By expanding public Wi-Fi that is compatible with the secure and seamless international standard OpenRoaming throughout Tokyo, we will ensure the safety and convenience of communications and also make a significant contribution to inbound tourism.
